I bet you often lose focus after a certain number of holes right? Let’s look at the nutrition you need before, during and after a round of golf.

Pre-round
It is essential to eat something substantial before the round (no matter how early you play) otherwise your energy will be depleted by the 5th hole. Here are some great examples:

• Cooked egg whites, low fat cottage cheese, a piece of fruit and 2 slices of wholewheat toast.
• Wholewheat toast with oats and some nuts and seeds.

In-round
It is vital that you eat and drink during your round. Most importantly you need water to prevent dehydration. Dehydration increases your heart rate and affects concentration – the last thing you want on the course. Ideal foods during the round include apples, bananas, protein bars or a trail mix of nuts, raisins and dried cranberries or blueberries. Try to eat around the 6th and 12th holes. The idea is not to get hungry, but to constantly fuel the golf machine. Sorry folks but pie, chips and gravy at halfway will not do the job. Keep some food spare for the last few holes especially if you’re in contention.

Post-round
Your body now needs to refuel. The ideal meal would be grilled chicken or fish, along with vegetables and a large glass of water. Trust me, you need it!
